The Man of Sorrows

This exemplar of the type omits Mary and John but in other ways follows the tradition closely. Instruments of the Passion are to the left and right of the central figure of Christ, who stands in the sarcophagus with head bowed, bleeding profusely and wearing only a loincloth. As in many other images of this type, his hands are crossed at the waist.

On the horizontal field behind the figure is the inscription ihs de nazaret, "Jesus of Nazareth," the beginning of the phrase Pilate ordered placed above Jesus' head on the cross (John 19:19).
